About the Festival ...

Picture a Norman Rockwell painting of tree-lined streets, a working turn-of-the-century train station, a grassy plaza in the center of town surrounded by elegant restaurants, wine bars and art galleries, with alleyways where guitar music flows onto the street. Now envision all of this in gorgeous hill country surrounded by vineyards and award-winning wineries, oak trees and hot springs just twenty minutes from some of the most beautiful coastline in California, and that is Paso Robles.

And now envision the idyllic setting above, but with the leaves changing to a soft golden, the crisp fall weather, and lit up streets at night, where festivalgoers are strolling to screenings and live music concerts in cozy intimate venues, rubbing elbows with filmmakers and musicians, where music and film collide in daytime concerts in large grassy fields, small screenings in elegant wineries, yes… The Paso Robles Digital Film Festival.

The Paso Robles Digital Film Festival will premiere November 20-23rd, 2008 in the heart of “Cowboy Wine Country.” This year’s theme is “Music and Film” and will include the following:

  • Screenings of winning films by emerging filmmakers in the categories of narratives, documentaries, music documentaries, music videos and shorts, including the mobile-third screen.
  • Screenings of some great music documentaries of times past including The Last Waltz, Don’t Look Back, Fallen Angel, and Be Here to Love Me.
  • Live music concerts day and night including the Bacon Brothers with actor Kevin Bacon and Michael Bacon and their band, American folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Kyle Eastwood (son of Clint Eastwood), Jack Tempchin, Rick Rosas (bass player for Neil Young and Joe Walsh), John Andrew Parks, Ronee Blakley (Star of Robert Altman’s Nashville), Travis Howard, Norm Stephens (guitar player for Lefty Frizzel and Merle Haggard), and others.
  • Panel discussions by guest filmmakers and music and film industry professionals including some of the experts in the new digital frontier.
  • A showcase of the newest in home theater technology via film-screenings in quaint settings on home-theater screens.
  • An awards concert, merging a concert with the presentation of awards to winning filmmakers.
  • A digital expo with companies showcasing the latest in digital film technology.
  • An expo showcasing local and national festival sponsors where guests can meet and interact with festival supporters.
  • A Day with the Wineries – a day where festivalgoers can venture out to select local wineries for wine tasting and film-screenings.
  • All events will be filmed in digital high-definition and webcast live to include the online community in the day-to-day excitement of the festival.
  • The festival will use green practices whenever possible such as utilizing solar-power generators for concerts, reusable, compostable or recyclable containers for events and using post-consumer recycled paper for festival print materials.
  • The majority of events will take place within a five-block radius of downtown Paso Robles so that festival-goers will be able to walk, take a horse-drawn carriage or ride in a locally owned and operated pedi-cab from one event to the next.  Film-screenings and music will be held in wine-tasting rooms, restaurants and hotels surrounding the Paso Robles City Park, in order to celebrate and support local businesses and give the festival a personal and community feel.

The film festival will span four days during the beautiful fall season in the quaint and elegant downtown Paso Robles, California, which has a unique history as the one-time hideout for the outlaw Jesse James.  James’ uncle, Drury, was one of the early founders of the town, originally attracted to the area for its abundant natural hot springs. Today Paso Robles is a flourishing wine country which boasts over 26,000 acres of wine grapes, 170 wineries, more than 100 tasting rooms, and an abundance of fine restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts, making it an exciting tourist destination and a perfect locale for our unique festival.

Mission …

To celebrate and honor emerging filmmakers in a fun and exciting multi-format which allows festival goers and online participants to enjoy music concerts, fascinating panel discussions, and screenings of some of our all-time favorite music documentaries, all while supporting and celebrating the unique community of Paso Robles, its businesses and its wineries.  We will also be donating a percentage of proceeds to a local charity benefiting youth.
